What is the TOEFL examination?

The Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL, is a standardized English language examination that may be taken to apply for admission to an English-speaking university or to facilitate immigration. Your reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills are put to the test.

This test will be administered in its entirety on the same day and will last a total of 4 hours. The speaking and writing portions will be tested after a 10-minute break from the reading and listening assessments.

What is the TOEFL exam like?

The four sections of the TOEFL exam are reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

Reading

The reading section includes three-four academic passages. You will be given 60-80 minutes to read the passages and answer 35-56 questions. The reading texts come from academic sources and vary in subject matter.  However, no particular subject knowledge is needed as all necessary information is included in the text.

Listening

The listening section consists of 4-6 classroom conversations and academic lectures. You will be given 60-92 minutes to answer a total of 34-51 questions. This will include listening to and answering questions about academic-related discussions.

Speaking

The speaking test will take about 20 minutes and include 6 tasks. The first two tasks will include expressing your ideas and opinions about a familiar topic.

The remaining 4 tasks are integrated tasks. You will be required to integrate listening and speaking, or reading and speaking. Here you will need to speak about information in a reading or listening text.

The speaking test is automated which means you will be given a headset and microphone. Your answers will be recorded and sent to an examiner for assessment.

Writing

You will have 50 minutes to complete the writing test. It will include two tasks. The first task will take 20 minutes. You will write an essay in response to a reading or listening text.

The second task will take 30 minutes. You will write an essay in which you will be required to support an opinion.
