EKG technicians are professionals who play a critical role in the collection of important data used to assess the heart healthiness of patients every day, and they must be suitable for this role as a critical member of the healthcare team.

People Skills – EKG technicians deal directly and constantly with patients, so it is important that they have great interaction skills with people and know how to show compassion and understanding for their situation.  Greeting them professionally, reassuring them, and being casual with your interaction with them so as to make them as relaxed as possible will be your daily tasks.

Caregiving Skills– So as to be successful in any medical field, you need to care for the patient and help them with whatever they need. EKG technicians are not an exception.  Coming to a hospital is always a stressful experience for the patient, and medical staff needs to provide that calming presence and help them out.

Active Listening Skills – EKG tests are sometimes very stressful experience to the patient, so, an EKG technician needs to be very attentive and listen to their needs and wants. You should never forget about the patient, but quite contrary. You need to provide eye contact, smile, and listen to what they are saying.

Attention to Detail Skills – One of the many tasks of EKG technicians is to monitor the health status of the heart. Every future analysis and diagnosis will be tied to the data he/she collects, so making sure you maintain vigilance in the collection of data and pay attention to all the details is of crucial importance. You must not make the smallest error or misalignment of sensors.

Communication Skills – We have already mentioned that these professionals need to have communication skills, but not only due to their communication with patients, but also due to the fact that they need to be able to clearly describe the tests they are about to perform, the process, and what the patient should expect. Furthermore, EKG technician needs to be able to communicate with the physician and provide them with key findings, notes from the test, which would help them with an ultimate diagnosis.

Documenting and Recording Skills –Each EKG test results in readings that need to be provided to the doctor for analysis and that is the main goal of the test.  So technician documents and records data must be delivered properly, accurately, and clearly.

Technology Skills – During your tasks, you will work with various computers and machines that assist in the testing process, meaning that you will have to be skilled to operate multiple pieces of equipment in your daily job.
